In New York, registered nurses meet mandated topic-specific coursework rather than a general hours quota, while advanced home health aides must hold a current CPR/BLS certification before they begin their training. The New York State Board of Nursing (NYSED, Office of the Professions) governs how registered nurses maintain their licence and expects them to keep their competence current. New York does not impose a general contact-hour quota; instead it mandates specific coursework — infection control every four years and a one-time course on child-abuse reporting.
Because these mandates are topic-specific, a CPR or BLS course does not substitute for them, and continuing-education activities must meet the state's requirements to count. Basic Life Support is, in practice, an employer and hospital requirement for many clinical roles rather than a standalone licence condition — but maintaining resuscitation skills remains part of the profession's duty to be ready to respond.

For basic home health aides and personal-care aides, CPR is employer-preferred rather than state-mandated, and a standalone certificate from a recognized course satisfies that expectation and must be renewed.
